Like Willy

The last month or so has mostly been about me playing catch-up with all the neglected school work that had been left unattended to because of work and contracts. Now that the dust has settled and I have nothing but a critique left on Monday, I can finally take a breather and focus on things that interest me a little more.

Little Red Riding Hood 2.0

A very cool video projection produced by Montreal’s own Playmind for this year’s Festival du nouveau cinéma. If you don’t care for the making-of, skip to the 1 min mark.

(Thanks to PhilGo20 for the tip)

I rather virtual sunsets

Check out this really cool 15-day time-lapse done in the GTA IV on Digital Foundry/Eurogamer.

(Thanks to Mike for pointing it out!)

Just a city boy…

For the first time in a very long time, the rest of the world seems to agree with my taste in television. Even with Dexter, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Community, and the like available on the tube right now, my predilection for campy tv musicals and really cute/awkward redheads has made Glee my greatest love by far and wide. As a matter-of-fact, the first thing that Stefan and I did when the boss left today was to heartily sing along to their cover of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’”. I really, REALLY hope Fox doesn’t mess this one up for me like it did almost every other show I ever truly loved.

On a (completely) different note, I went to see the Coens’ A Serious Man last Friday and while it was incredibly well made on every possible level, I couldn’t help but leave the theater in a complete funk. It’s probably one of the bleakest/most depressing movies I’ve ever seen… So yeah, go see it!

United Visual Artists

My upcoming paper on screen culture has re-introduced me to the work of the UVA and I thought I’d share it with you. This London-based studio specializes in visually stunning art & performance installations; my favorite of which being what they did Massive Attack’s 2008 tour (which I still can’t believe I missed). A few more pics after the jump but I strongly suggest you visit their website instead.

Peepoo Bag

The Peepoo Bag is quite an interesting idea. Offering people in Third World countries a sanitary and sustainable way of disposing of human waste, this little bag is helping them solve some pretty big problems.

The English eat sauerkraut: Geoff Barrow’s Beak>

I was pretty happy to wake up to an e-mail announcing that Beak>’s eponymous first album is set to be released in October.

For those unfamiliar with the project, it’s Portishead producer Geoff Barrow’s new band, which was formed in January 2009. Beak>’s sound – from the songs that I’ve heard – is very much a departure from anything that I find familiar in Barrow’s past works; more closely resembling the likes of NEU! than [P].

See what I mean after the jump!

‘Souffrez pour moi’ by Ninette van Kamp

This is a very cool project by Dutch designer Ninette van Kamp that aims to study the relationship between pain and beauty by achieving a sort of temporary scarification by imprinting people’s skin with complex embroidering patterns. The result is quite elegant.
